MATERNITY ALLOWANCE

The maternity allowance is granted to women who have a work permit in Norway, who are employed or self-employed in Norway. It may be obtained provided that, during at least six of the ten months before the delivery, the woman had income from which pension contributions were deducted and if the amount earned during this period is at least NOK 50 676.

In order for the office to be able to calculate the amount of the benefit to which a given person is entitled, the employer must fill in an additional form on the income received by that person (Norw. inntektsopplysninger).

In the case of parental benefit, the payment period is 49 weeks with the full amount or 59 weeks with 80% of the full rate. This period is to be divided between the parents of the child: 15 weeks are available for the father and 15 weeks for the mother, 6 weeks of which fall immediately after the birth. If the option of 59 weeks is chosen, each parent has 19 weeks at his/her disposal.

PATERNITY ALLOWANCE

The father of a child who works in Norway must meet the income criteria according to which he must have earned at least NOK 53 200 during 6 of the last 10 months before he started collecting benefits. Then, he is entitled to receive paternity allowance (Norw. foreldrepenger til far) if the mother of the child has not earned the right to Norwegian maternity allowance.

The father of a child can start to receive paternity allowance from the seventh week following the birth of the child if the mother has already returned to work (or has started a new job). The benefit can be collected in the following amounts:

• • 40 weeks at a 100% rate
  • 50 weeks at an 80% rate

The application for paternity allowance is preferably submitted between 1 and 3 weeks after the birth of the child.
