Recognition of professional qualitications

There are 28 professional groups in Norway that have a protected profession name. Therefore, they need an authorisation or licence before a person is allowed to work in the Norwegian health service. The list of regulated professions includes the following:

  • Audiologist
  • Chiropractor
  • Dentist
  • Clinical Nutritionist
  • Pharmacist
  • Physiotherapist
  • Dental Hygienist
  • General Medical Practitioner
  • Optometrist
  • Orthoptist
  • Social pedagogue
  • Chiropodist [translator’s note: according to the regulated professions database]
  • Cardiovascular Perfusionist
  • Nurse
  • Nurse assistant
  • Midwife
  • Care Worker
  • Health Care Worker
  • Prosthetist
  • Psychologist
  • Radiographer
  • Dental Secretary
  • Medical Secretary
  • Dental Technician
  • Pharmacy Technician
  • Emergency Medical Technician
  • Medical Laboratory Technician
  • Occupational Therapist

The application for recognition of professional qualifications is submitted electronically via Altinn profile (https://www.altinn.no/). No bankID codes or even an identification number are required for its submission. It is enough to create a login and password.

When submitting the application, a fee of NOK 1 665 must be paid.

The approximate examination period is about 3 months. It may take longer if, for example, the application lacks relevant information or documents.
